Twenty-Four asked you to keep an ordinary hour. Twenty-Five asks what you do with the hour that already bit.
25 ﹁ Tattvas and Bodhisattvas is the twenty-fifth of the ninety-five untyings of the Order of the Universe, and it confronts the plain, unchosen damage a life absorbs simply by continuing to be lived — illness, loss, betrayal, venom already circulating. The knot of this degree is the Serpent's Bite — a wound hidden, denied, or allowed to consume the one who carries it. The untying is the Raised Serpent: the same wound, undone in nothing, but lifted into open view rather than hidden in the folds of the camp, so that it becomes a standard other afflicted people can themselves look toward and live.
This is a full monograph of sixty-six pages with twelve engraved plates, moving through the wound rightly held on every level the Order recognizes:
The Mythological — Numbers 21's wilderness plague of fiery serpents, healed not by their removal but by Moses raising one bronze serpent on a pole, so that whoever looks upon it lives; the later fate of that same serpent, broken by King Hezekiah once the people had begun worshipping it as Nehushtan; Scottish Rite Freemasonry's own twenty-fifth degree, Knight of the Brazen Serpent, teaching patience under affliction; the Rod of Asclepius carefully distinguished from Hermes's two-serpent Caduceus; and the Ouroboros, the serpent that devours and thereby sustains itself.
The Spiritual — the Hindu and yogic tattvas, the graded categories of manifest reality through which kundalini is said to rise station by station, refusing to skip the coarser rungs on its way to the subtler ones; the Mahayana bodhisattva vow, which sees the exit from suffering and does not take it alone; and the Order's own doctrine of muo — to integrate the shadow, to make whole precisely by looking at the unseen — guarded here against its most patient counterfeit: performed invulnerability, a wound concealed and dressed in the vocabulary of transcendence.
The Numerological — the degree's native name, huicwplwm, "the one serpent," resolving by igli] to 43.23; twenty-five as a perfect square, an ordinary number raised without being replaced, mirroring exactly what the bronze serpent's own raising performs; and Scottish Rite Freemasonry's independent placement of its Brazen Serpent teaching at this identical number.
The Developmental — the particular twenty-fifth birthday that arrives carrying more than cake; Jeffrey Jensen Arnett's window of emerging adulthood closing near this age; the prefrontal cortex's widely-cited structural maturation, completing its capacity to integrate past experience rather than merely avoid it; and Erikson's earliest stirrings of generativity — the first unwelcome intimation that an old wound might have a use beyond one's own life.
The Operative — Tribal Leadership as the capacity to look first at one's own coarser stations and then, by the same unflinching motion, at the suffering of those one leads, calling neither look a weakness. And here this degree teaches the sixth Asnito consonant, T, the plain unaspirated stop of top and bit — a small, patient attention turned on a wound long taken for granted as merely a bite and nothing else.
