The Thirty-Sixth Untying gave you a foundation wider than anything a Tribe applauds. The Thirty-Seventh gives you an ear for the difference between a voice that is whole and a voice that only sounds it.

37 ﹁ Chokmah and the Merti Snake is the thirty-seventh of the ninety-five untyings of the Order of the Universe, and it confronts counsel — another's, or one's own — that arrives fluent, confident, and dressed in every outward mark of wisdom, and comes apart the instant real weight is placed on it. The knot of this degree is the Parted Lips — a mouth, or a mind, speaking from two motives at once while sounding, the whole time, like one. The untying is the Flash of Wisdom: insight that is genuinely whole, holding what looks like opposites without ever splitting, because it arrived, undivided, before the split could occur.

This is a full monograph of sixty-three pages with twelve engraved plates, moving through the number thirty-seven on every level the Order recognizes:

The Mythological — Chokmah, "Wisdom," the second Sephirah of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the very first differentiation to emanate from Keter, the Crown — complementary to the paths this Order already taught in full at Degree 22 — pictured in the tradition as the Or Yashar, a straight descending flash of creative potential prior to articulate form, received by Binah and given shape, and, in one honored Hasidic stream, tied to the paradox yesh me'ayin, "something from nothing," and the discipline of bittul, a self stepping aside long enough for genuine insight to land undistorted.

The Spiritual — Spell 37 of the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, in Thomas George Allen's 1974 translation, in which the deceased, addressing a serpent named for its own parted lips, repels the threat not by force but by naming a true and specific office — Khnum, Lord of Shenyt, who carries the words of the gods to Re and the report of the gods to Nehebkau — a wholeness of identity that does not waver by audience and so gives a hostile division nothing to work with.

The Numerological — the Order's own native word for this paradoxical wisdom, hboteiliror, joining hboteil, wisdom, and iror, the coincidence of opposites, whose igli] consonant-sum lands exactly on thirty-seven — the third time this device has produced an exact match in this band — and whose digit-root, reducing to one, rejoins Degree 1, the Monad, in a kinship the Kabbalistic material has already made literal: Chokmah is Keter's own first emanation.

The Developmental — the fatigue of the mid-to-late thirties at counsel that reverses itself by room: a trusted mentor who tells one story to her face and its opposite to a committee; a friend whose praise and doubt both, on inspection, only ever serve the friendship's own comfort; and the harder discovery of one's own reasoning, assembled after a verdict already reached rather than before it — each tested the same honest way, by whether it holds its shape under real scrutiny.

The Operative — the leader who tells two departments two sincere, incompatible accounts of one decision, and the trust that collapses all at once when they are compared; a discipline for testing any advisor's fluency against whether the reasoning underneath survives a different question asked of it; and Spell 37's own answer, carried into ordinary leadership — one account of the truth, spoken the same way in every room, rather than a voice recalibrated by whoever is currently listening.
